'Blown off by the bunch'

Kathy Smith

This month the spotlight falls on Kathy Smith

Cycling achievement most proud of?
'Unexpectedly winning the 24 hour Fellowship Vet's Long Distance BAR (although I would love to get the certificate at some time!!) - first time it has been won by a woman; very closely followed by bronze medal in the National Championship '100' the same year.'

Favourite bike or bike you would most like to own?
'Got to be my trusty Aende, made by 'Pongo' without my knowledge, a 40th birthday present. Felt right from the first time I sat on it.'

Cycling or sporting heroes?
'John Atkin, cyclo-cross champion, who had enough time (and thought) to pose for a young teenager mid-race. He still won!'

Any other interests sporting or otherwise?
'Gardening, cooking, puzzles, reading, needlework, DIY, grandchildren . .(do you want me to go on?)'

Favourite bike ride?
'I have many favourites, but one will always stick in my mind. Heavy overnight snow and too cold for my young brothers to go out. My sister also stayed at home. I must have been about 10 years old and rode with Dad from West Bridgford through Appletondale to the cafe (now a Chinese restaurant) at White Post. Riding on roads not touched by traffic was great, and a 24-hour cafe was to my young mind quite unbelievable. Did those people really stay up all night? I still remember our meal - egg and chips, bread and butter, with a mug of tea - as our usual fare (with us all to feed) was sandwiches. Must have been about a 50 mile round trip.'

Favourite Cafe food?
'Scrambled egg on toast'

Steel, Aluminium, titanium or Carbon?
'Whatever David says I am having!'

The ultimate cycling question - Campagnolo or Shimano?
'Ditto - I don't actually get a choice.'

Tell us something we don't know about yourself:
'I am a Grade 7 pianist'
